THEORY & PRACTICE

  • What if songs are spells? What happens when we treat songs as spells that have the power to create magical changes in our lives? If that were true, what songs would you listen to and what songs would you sing?

I love starting with ‘what if,’ asking questions and experimenting, following curiosity and exploring possibilities! This is a space to explore the premise songs are spells.

  • I believe..

    • everyone is magical. it is in our nature.

    • magic is when we materialize intentionally.

    • magic happens when we harness the energy of symbols to call in what we desire.

    • imagination, words, songs, and images are all technologies of magic.

    • magic can be practiced infinite number of ways.

    spell /spel / noun

a form of words used as a magical charm or incantation

I think of a spell as a direct instruction for universal/ intelligence/ energy - like a line of code telling energy how to materialize.

Etymologically speaking the Latin-rooted words for ‘spell’ are indeed traced back to songs!

    INCANTATION

    ENCHANTMENT

    CHANT

    CANT (latin) SONG/SING

    CHARM

    CARMEN (latin) SONG

  • when listening to songs I like to tune into 2 realms:

    the somatic & the symbolic

    by paying attention to:

    • how my body feels (somatic)

    • what the song means to me (symbolic)

  • There are many ways to practice..

If songs are spells then all singing has the potential for impact!

Today I like to keep it short and sweet by writing song spells based on a simple two-line song spell formula (developed to help you model my process and make it your own) to immediately embody the feeling of what I want.

    1. Properly identifying my desire and formulating it into words is the cornerstone of my practice.

    • First I determine what I want to do/be/feel/believe. What is most important to me is being in tune with what I want and how I want to feel. It’s super effective to get down to the level of core desires so I crafted a desire playbook to help facilitate this process for folks.

    • Formulation: Like in any formula, the elements, their meaning (semantics) and their placement (syntax) matter.

    2. Next comes melody There are a number of ways I share to put words to melody, my personal favorite is improv & iteration.

    3. Voice: vocal toning and chanting seed mantras help shake away unwanted/irrelevant vibrations and warm up the voice.

    • I find that singing my spell at least twice in a row is enough to shift my consciousness into instant embodiment of what I want.

  • In 2018, facing a scary decision, I searched the internet for some support with surrendering. Naturally I landed on this YouTube video of Oprah. She shares how she had auditioned for ‘The Color Purple’ and was rudely cast aside. She wanted the role so badly, it was so painful to think it wouldn’t be hers, she couldn’t seem to surrender to the divine plan for her life. And so, from her mouth came a spontaneous song, a prayer she sang asking for surrender. After several rounds of singing she found surrender and was at peace with not getting the role. And the moment she found surrender was the moment Steven Spielberg called to let her know she got the job!

I thought damn, if it’s good enough for Oprah I better give this a try! I made up my own song for surrender and after singing it twice felt an instant shift in my body.

Since then, what started as a self-soothing practice evolved and I continued noticing immediate shifts in my experience based on what I was singing.. My songs were spells and I didn’t even realize it!

I’ve always loved words and the portals they open. I am super interested in recognizing verbal language patterns and what they bring into our material reality. In college I landed in a symbolic logic class which is a branch of Philosophy that studies logical reasoning. This was one of my favorite classes and resulted in the only A+ on my transcript. I loved the fact that arguments could be written out in mathematical formulas providing a binary determination as to their soundness. A logical proof establishes the validity of a proposition, the semantics (meanings) and syntax (order) of its elements are important. I love the idea of mapping this onto how we formulate our desires. Is how I’m talking about what I want a sound way to get it?

In physics, chemistry, computer programming, written and spoken language etc. there are formulas for everything in our physical world and I am interested the formulas of intentionally spoken and sung words and how they impact physical reality aka spells.
